The World Cup in Australia and New Zealand begins under the best auspices for Italy women's soccer team. Milena Bertolini's national team defeated Argentina (1-0) yesterday in a photo finish win at Eden Park Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand. The winning goal, three minutes from the end, came from Cristiana Girelli. With this result on the opener, the Italian national team momentarily moves to the top of Group G, tied with Sweden, on three points. Argentina and South Africa are at 0. As predicted, the one against the Albiceleste girls was a very tight match. The Italian team had some supremacy during the match, but failed to find the winning jolt. At least until the 87th minute, when the timeless center forward who plays for Juventus, 33 years old, beat Correa with a skillful header, after collecting a perfect cross from the left by Boattin. And to think that Girelli had only been on the field for four minutes, to replace Dragoni. Never choice proved, therefore, more apt. For the Brescia striker it was goal number 54 in 105 games with the national team. Hence Italy, renewed and young in many of its elements, relies right away on one of its historical veterans, to start on the right foot a World Cup never so eagerly awaited. The goal is to hit one of the two places that will lead directly to the passage of the round.
