"One Health" is an approach based on the realization that we all reside on the same planet and that the health of the environment, animals, and humans are interconnected. This observation (confirmed by the tragedy of the pandemic) leads to collaboration among various disciplines, including doctors, veterinarians, environmental scientists, economists, sociologists, and psychologists. The first step is to dissolve the barriers between scientific disciplines and bring experts from various disciplines together to collaborate. It happened recently in Rome, with the opening of the Ispra laboratories (Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research) in the building that houses the research center of the IRCCS Fondazione Santa Lucia, an Italian garrison in the field of neurorehabilitation. Environmental research excellence and neuroscience excellence join forces to create a more complete and modern vision of ecosystem dynamics and to investigate how they affect human health. The new laboratories are dedicated to environmental research, with a focus on contamination and its effects in water, soil, air, sea, and fish resources, and will analyze samples from all over Italy. The Ispra researchers join the Santa Lucia Foundation's 200 researchers dedicated to the study of neurological diseases. The first collaborative project, which will assess the impact of toxicity detected in some stretches of the Mediterranean on human health, has already begun.
