"On the night of July 27-28, 30 years ago, Cosa Nostra struck another blow in its massacre and subversive strategy against the State, anti-Mafia legislation and the hard prison. The mobsters detonated three car bombs, one in Milan on Via Palestro and two in Rome in front of San Giovanni in Laterano and San Giorgio al Velabro. The toll was very heavy: five dead, dozens injured and extensive damage to the historical, cultural and religious heritage. We bow once again to the memory of the victims and renew our feeling of closeness and solidarity with their families and loved ones". With this message yesterday, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni recalled the 1993 Mafia massacres. "No one will ever be able to forget those difficult years for our nation, characterized by ferocious attacks and a long trail of blood and violence," Meloni continued, "Evil did not have the last word. Out of the pain, suffering and sacrifice of extraordinary figures like Paolo Borsellino and Giovanni Falcone a new light was born, a social and cultural movement that countered the scent of freedom to the unbreathable stench of organized crime. In these 30 years, the nation has gained an awareness that mafias can be defeated. An awareness that the State and the institutions have been able to decline into a body of legal, technical and operational tools that have made it possible to fight the mafia phenomenon and made Italy a model at the international level". "Fighting the mafia is the moral issue that guides the daily action of the government," Meloni concluded, "It is the compass that guides our work and allows us to continue on the path taken to adapt anti-mafia legislation and make it increasingly incisive and capable of responding to the new challenges of organized crime".
