Pope Francis has appealed to Moscow to reinstate the wheat agreement with Ukraine. This was the message in his Angelus on Sunday, July 30, during which he said: "I appeal to my brothers, the authorities of the Russian Federation, so that the Black Sea Initiative is restored, and the grain can be transported safely." Bergoglio also requested that people "pray for the tormented Ukraine, where war destroys everything, including wheat, and this is a grave offense to God, because wheat is his gift to feed humanity, and the cry of millions of brothers and sisters who suffer hunger rises to heaven." He also commented on the occasion of the World Day Against Human Trafficking, which "fights the crime that turns people into commodities. Human trafficking is a heinous crime that affects far too many people: children, women, grandchildren, and workers. So many people were taken advantage of. All live in deplorable conditions and face society's indifference and rejection. Today's world is rife with human trafficking." "God bless those who are committed to fighting trafficking," he added. As a result, the Vatican maintains its commitment to promoting dialogue and peace in Ukraine: in June, Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, president of the CEI - Italian Episcopal Conference, traveled to Kiev and then to Moscow as a pontiff's envoy.
