A 13-year-old Ghanaian boy, Chris Obeng Abom, was run over on the night of July 31 in San Vito di Negrar, in the province of Verona. Transported in very serious condition to Verona's Borgo Trento hospital, he died yesterday morning from injuries sustained in the impact. He was killed by a car that fled after causing the accident. From initial reconstructions, the young man was walking on the road when he was hit by the car, which then drove away without rendering aid. According to ICU doctors, if he had been rescued, he probably would have been saved. The man driving was identified and charged by Carabinieri with vehicular homicide, fleeing and hit-and-run. He was stopped yesterday afternoon: he is a 39-year-old Veronese laborer who, according to initial reconstructions, has a small record, including drug dealing and drunk driving. Carabinieri got to him thanks to the municipal video surveillance system and the wreckage of the car found on the asphalt. The man admitted to driving but not to hitting the boy. The young man's dream was to become a soccer player on some big team. He was a youth member of the local Negrar team and had been attending Polisportiva Negrar for four years. A dream abruptly interrupted by tragedy.
