Urgent technical table yesterday in the Lazio Region to seek solutions to the worrying situation in Ciampino, on the outskirts of Rome, where dioxin levels exceed more than 100 times those indicated by the WHO. The emergency was caused by a fire at a waste treatment plant last July 29. After initial reassuring data, alarms were triggered in subsequent surveys in eight municipalities: in addition to Ciampino, there are Grottaferrata, Marino, Albano, Ariccia, Lanuvio, Castelgandolfo, and Frascati. Excluded from the emergency, however, is the Italian capital. Security measures were announced by Lazio Region President Francesco Rocca at a press conference. People were asked to keep doors and windows closed, limit travel to the bare minimum, limit the use of air conditioning systems, and wash fruits and vegetables. Developments are being monitored for air dispersion trends.
