A file for attempted murder has been opened against 28-year-old Sergio Del Prete, who on Tuesday evening attempted to run over anti-mafia priest Don Antonio Coluccia, who has spent years fighting organized crime in the suburbs of Rome, while a demonstration for legality was in progress. One of the priest's escort officers shot at Del Prete, wounding him in the arm; a cleaver and a hammer were discovered in the boy's backpack, prompting the prosecutor to consider charging him with illegally carrying weapons as well. Meanwhile, politics and institutions rally around Don Coluccia: "I am shocked by the aggression directed at Don Coluccia. I express my sympathies to him and send my best wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured escort agents. Witnessing such incidents in the capital is intolerable. Let us not back down one step in the fight against violence and the mafia," writes Lazio Region President Francesco Rocca on Twitter, while Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri describes "the aggression against Don Coluccia during the march of legality in Tor Bella Monaca as very serious. I called him to express the closeness of all Rome and to wish the injured escort agent a speedy recovery. Violence and mafias must be combated with all available means."
