The dream of providing superfast internet to all Italian families and businesses has yet to be realized. In fact, all of the previous governments' plans have been significantly delayed. As a result, the government has just relaunched the new National Ultra-Broadband Strategy 2023-2026, which builds on the Italian Ultra-Broadband Strategy approved by the Draghi government in May 2021. The ultimate goal, however, remains the same: to regain ground in the development of fast connectivity throughout the country, to intervene in the so-called white and gray areas of the territory, to push the spread of 5G, and to relaunch the telecommunications sector. A total of 2.82 billion euros are on the table for investment. A portion of the funds made available will be dedicated to actual infrastructure, requiring the public sector to invest more heavily in the field. In this regard, EUR 400 million has been set aside for a publicly owned fiber-optic "return network" along railway lines. The collaboration with FS also extends to 5G: 250 million will be allocated to build a multi-operator 5G public infrastructure along high-speed routes. Another 800 million euros will be spent instead to encourage large national companies (public bodies, industrial districts, port areas, highly specialized poles, and agricultural areas) to develop innovative vertical applications and services based on 5G and cutting-edge technologies like edge computing.
