Collaboration with China must continue, even if Italy is about to say goodbye to the "Silk Road", the global infrastructure project promoted by Beijing, which only Italy had joined among the G7 countries, with the government of Conte and Salvini. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani is in China to consolidate relations in light of new plans by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who has always been unconvinced of the 2019 agreements, preferring the Atlanticist line, especially in light of the war in Ukraine. The trip, which ends September 5, will also take Tajani to Kazakhstan for a lightning visit. However, the central issue will be that of the expiring agreement and the likely non-renewal. The decision will go through a vote in Parliament, but, the minister confirms, "I think there is a majority not in favor of renewal, but we will see, whatever decision Italy takes, it will not be a decision that aims to penalize China". The mission will serve precisely to ensure "commercial cooperation with China and good relations" beyond "Italian participation in the project." The vice premier will co-chair with his counterpart, Wang Yi, the 11th plenary session of the Italy-China Intergovernmental Committee, the first to be held since 2020. This engagement will be complemented by bilateral meetings with Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Trade Minister Wang Wentao.
