Illegal cement, pollution and bad purification, illegal fishing put the Italian sea and coastal areas in check. There are 19,530 environmental crimes ascertained in 2022 along the Italian coasts, with a + 3.2% compared to 2021, while administrative offenses, 44,444, grew by 13.1%. The number of people reported and arrested decreased, albeit slightly (-4%) (19,658) and more significantly that of seizures (3,590, with a reduction of -43.3%). Adding up crimes and administrative offenses in Italy, an average of 8.7 infringements for every km of coastline (there were 7.5 in 2021), one every 115 meters, was ascertained, thanks to over one million checks (exactly 1,087,802, + 31% compared to 2021) carried out by the Port Authorities and the police. This is what emerges, in summary, from the new report Mare Monstrum 2023 of Legambiente which collects data and numbers of 2022 on the sea violated and threatened by environmental illegalities, released on the occasion of the anniversary of the death of Angelo Vassallo, the fisherman mayor of Pollica brutally killed on September 5, 2010 for his commitment to the protection of the sea and the coasts of Cilento against speculation and illegality.
