The 132 kV submarine cable that connects the island of Elba to Piombino (Livorno) is now operational. Terna, led by Giuseppina Di Foggia, completed the work, which was critical to the entire national electricity system. The power line spans approximately 37 kilometers, 34 of which are submarine and three of which are completely underground. This is a critical infrastructure project that will result in the doubling of connection lines between the national electricity system and the island's grid. The submarine cable was laid by Prysmian's Leonardo Da Vinci ship at a maximum depth of about 70 meters below sea level, beginning at the Portoferraio island landing and progressing to the Piombino continental coast. The company in charge of the national electricity transmission grid has protected the area's marine habitat. In fact, in the months leading up to the start of cable laying activities, approximately 53,000 cuttings of Posidonia oceanica, an aquatic plant native to the Mediterranean Sea that plays an important role in the overall marine ecosystem, were repositioned in the Gulf of Follonica.
