Yesterday a new page was written in the case of the record-breaking speed cameras in Cadoneghe, a small town of 16 thousand souls in the province of Padua, which had produced 24 thousand fines in little more than a month. In fact, two notices of investigation have been served on two Carabinieri from the local command, the acting commander and an officer. The two are accused of perjury in public records for the installation of the disputed speed detection devices. According to investigators, the devices may have been put into operation without having completed the institutional process for their use. The affair began on June 26, when the two fixed speed cameras placed along a regional road had been turned on. At the end of July, the first balance sheet comes: in one month, 24 thousand speeding violations detected have been recorded, amounting to at least one million euros in fines that could have entered municipal coffers. Conditional is a must because the protest of those fined came immediately, with appeals upon appeals: some reached 55 fines and some took more than one in the same day. Tensions had definitely risen in the late evening of August 9, when unknown persons had blown up the incriminated speed camera, knocking out the second device as well with a single gunshot.
