At the national level, the utilized agricultural area (UAA) devoted to organic farming in Italy reaches an all-time record of 2.3 million hectares (+7.5 percent), equal to almost one field in five (19 percent) of the total with more than 82,000 agricultural producers, the highest number among European Union countries. This is according to a Coldiretti analysis. Of the organically farmed land, 43 percent is devoted to arable crops such as wheat, barley and oats, 28 percent to meadows and pastures for livestock, 24 percent to permanent crops such as orchards, olive groves and vineyards, and 2.5 percent to vegetables. The result drives consumption in Italy, where the value of the domestic market for organic products rises to nearly 5.5 billion euros, with +9 percent growth in 2023 over last year. ¾ of domestic consumption, amounting to more than 4.2 billion euros, is concentrated at home, while the rest is in the restaurant sector, where there is a tumultuous growth of +18% in the last year, ending in July, according to data from the Sana-Nomisma Observatory 2023.
