"The understanding with Tunisia is not a failure; more importantly, Italy did not sign it, Europe did. Europe should take charge of the immigration problem as much as the Meloni government is doing". Yesterday Antonio Tajani commented on the migrant emergency that is facing our country, and Lampedusa in particular, and responded to the criticism of those who see the memorandum of understanding with Tunisia, from which almost all the boats arriving on the island depart, as already shipwrecked: meanwhile, the Foreign Minister recalled, "it was not signed by President Meloni, it was signed by the Tunisian government and the European Commission. Italy was present as a promoter, a supporter, but it is a matter for the European Commission and the Tunisian government. About how it is proceeding, one should ask them: we say to do it quickly, to do everything that is foreseen in the memorandum". Another account, and totally unrelated to this one, is the flip-flop of France and Germany, with Paris intent on tightening controls at Ventimiglia, and Berlin no longer accepting relocations. "These are also two different events," Tajani premised, "yet France and Germany are talking about secondary migration. The problem is primary migration, the thousands of people who are arriving in an explosive situation that there is in sub-Saharan Africa. I also called for an international conference on the Sahel because I called for more and more action by all the international institutions, because there is a convergence of crises that is no longer a powder keg. That one has already exploded". (Photo by Olaf Kosinsky)
