Italian companies and Artificial Intelligence, the latter is unknown. Despite widespread discussion in our nation and despite its promise, Artificial Intelligence is being underutilized by our businesses, particularly the smaller ones: just 2% of our SMEs with at least 10 workers report investing in IT between 2019 and 2021. This figure climbs to 10% when the investment in AI is combined with the investment in the technology required for its implementation, namely Big Data. This was revealed during the work of an INAPP (National Institute for the Analysis of Public Policies) session in which fresh data from a survey done in 2022 on a representative sample of around 30 thousand Italian enterprises were presented. This evidence then varies considerably based on the scale of the company, its geographic location, and its industry. Suffice it to say that the share that adopts Artificial Intelligence varies from 1.5% in small companies (with less than 50 employees) to 12% of those with over 250 employees, from 7% in the high-tech services sector to 1.2% in less qualified services.
