Another workplace accident in Italy has resulted in one death and one severe injury. Yesterday in the early afternoon at the port of Salerno, two young Messinian seafarers working for the shipping company Caronte & Tourist were crushed by a heavy vehicle in the port's commercial and vehicle handling area. There was nothing to do for the second officer of the ship Cartour Delta, which was sailing to Messina. The severely injured first officer was rushed to the Ruggi hospital in Salerno under code red. The dynamics of the incident remain unclear: in the first minutes following the accident, the version of the investment by a truck inside the ship's garage at pier 26 spread due to the malfunction of the fifth wheel - the steel piece that connects the trailer to the conductor - with the moving part that caused the trailer to detach and the tragedy. According to a different reconstruction provided by the Messina shipping company, the two men would have been crushed "while they were on the ground" by a "rail tractor of the port company" that "maneuvered in reverse during commercial operations." Everything would have transpired on "a quay of the port of Salerno" rather than on board. It would be one of the usual dynamics of port accidents in this second situation. It will be up to the investigators to determine how the incidents occurred and if the safety criteria were met.
