After the week of suffering recorded in Lampedusa, with the record number of migrants landed in a single day (more than 5,000 in 110 different landings on the day of September 12) and already relocated along the country, the turnaround on irregular migration announced by the government between Friday and Sunday is official. The Council of Ministers passed the measure modifying the term of detention in centers for the repatriation of those who enter Italy illegally, which will be raised to the maximum limit allowed by current European regulations: 6 months, extendable for an additional 12, for a total of 18 months. As of today, the detention limit for asylum seekers is already 12 months and will not be changed, but will become effective through the establishment of the necessary detention centers for anyone who illegally lands in Italy, including asylum seekers. The government will also mandate the Ministry of Defense today to build the facilities to detain illegal immigrants as soon as possible.
