"Despite the structural damage, the school year begins on a regular basis in these lands. It is a robust and tangible indication of tenacity and resistance. This opening signifies, through the school and beyond, a message of unaltered proximity to the people of Romagna." These are the words of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, who spoke yesterday in Forlì at the school year's opening ceremony, on the lawn of the "Saffi-Alberti" Technical Institute. Mattarella recalled that "in the days following the flood, volunteers from all over Italy, particularly young girls and boys, handled shovels, brooms, and containers. Their contribution was invaluable in the fight against mud and in demonstrating a culture of solidarity. They have provided concrete evidence that Italy is a community. That we all overcome difficulties together". "The Republican Constitution provides that 'the school is open to all'. Because all citizens are equal from birth. One of the pillars of the Republic is the right to education for all. As a result, school is for everyone and of everyone. It rejects exclusions, marginalization, differences, and gaps. It would be - and sometimes is – distorted,” Mattarella repeated, before adding, “it must be closely considered that approximately 800 thousand of our students are migrants or the children of migrants. One-tenth of the students matriculated in our schools. It is an impressive commitment to education. They study as Italians, learn our culture and values, and have the potential to be a great asset to the country. A substantial portion of Italy's future may hinge on their successful integration."
