The future of Malpensa Airport and its territory will be in hydrogen. Around the great northern air terminal, Italy's first Hydrogen Valley - as well as one of the first in Europe - will be built in the airport area. The European Union is also supporting the initiative through funds from the Horizon Europe program. Malpensa, the country's first cargo airport, is at the center of an area of fundamental importance for regional and national cargo traffic: an ideal location for the birth of a Hydrogen Valley, which would allow the establishment of a hydrogen ecosystem covering the entire value chain (production, storage, transport and consumption) by integrating local and regional assets in the Busto Arsizio and Malpensa area. Special attention will be paid to optimizing the production costs of hydrogen, one of the most viable energy sources for decarbonization. The goal is to lay the groundwork for the use of hydrogen at airports (Malpensa can become a model for other airports), helping to cut climate-changing emissions and extending the benefits to manufacturing sectors as well.
