Green light from the Region of Sicily for the construction of the regasifier at Porto Empedocle. A project that has been at a standstill for years, with an authorization that expired at the time, now resumes with the possibility of completing the plant by 2028. Realizing such a project (with a methane regasification capacity of 8 billion cubic meters per year) requires about 4 years of time and an investment of more than a billion euros. There are still a few steps to go before it can enter the construction phase, but the step forward sanctioned last Monday during a meeting between the President of the Region of Sicily, Renato Schifani, and Enel CEO Flavio Cattaneo is remarkable. Enel will now directly engage in the construction effort, although it may use a financial partner to reduce the economic commitment. The work is seen as strategic because it makes it possible to create an important energy supply hub in southern Italy as well, which can help supply the rest of the country as well.
