According to data from Terna, the company that operates the national electricity transmission grid, electricity demand in Italy totaled 25.7 billion kWh in August, a decrease of 1.1 percent compared to the same period in 2022. This value was achieved with the same number of working days (22) and a slightly lower average monthly temperature than in August 2022 (-0.6°). Adjusting the figure from these effects, the change changes sign, registering +0.7 percent compared to August 2022. The IMCEI index compiled by Terna, which examines the industrial consumption of about 1,000 "energy-intensive" companies, records an overall zero change compared to the same month last year. In fact, compared with positive changes in the transportation equipment, food and iron and steel sectors, the non-ferrous metals, chemical, paper and mechanical engineering sectors are down. Those of cement, lime and gypsum, ceramics and glassware are stable. In cyclical terms, the value of electrical demand, seasonally adjusted for temperature effect, is up (+1 percent) compared to July 2023. Substantially stable is the cyclical change in the IMCEI index (+0.2%).
