Italy, as envisaged in the proposal to update the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan, focuses on widespread use of renewables and energy efficiency to ensure decarbonization and energy security, including through source diversification and integration of various technological solutions. As a result, in accordance with a motion passed by Parliament last May committing the government to support technological research on nuclear fusion and fission and to properly inform citizens about these technologies, the Ministry established the National Platform for Sustainable Nuclear, which met for the first time yesterday at the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security. The meeting, presided over by Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, was attended by representatives from the world of universities, scientific associations, public entities operating in the field of nuclear safety and decommissioning, as well as companies that already have investment programs in place in the nuclear sector, in the production of components and plants, and in nuclear medical applications. The Platform intends to establish a path toward the probable reintroduction of nuclear energy use in Italy, as well as the growth opportunities for the national industrial chain already working in the sector, at specific times. Pichetto noted that "it is obviously not a question of proposing the use in Italy of large third-generation nuclear power plants, but of evaluating new innovative nuclear safety technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and fourth-generation nuclear reactors (AMR)".
