For the first time, the Ministry of Environment has gathered together interested enterprises, research institutes, universities, and institutions to form the new National Platform for Sustainable Nuclear. A wholly new, sustainable, and safe nuclear power source, with seven months to plot a course to get there. This is the first result of the majority-approved motion last May, which committed the government to supporting technological research on nuclear fusion and fission as well as adequately informing citizens about these technologies. "It is obviously not a question of proposing the use of large-scale third-generation nuclear power plants in Italy, but of evaluating the new safe technologies of innovative nuclear power" , said Minister Gilberto Pichetto. His predecessor, Five Star MP Sergio Costa, questioned him how he plans to "overcome the two referendums" and the decision "expressed twice by the Italian people that led to the closure of nuclear power reactors following the Chernobyl disaster". Among the most ardent nuclear supporters is Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, while environmental NGOs are among the most suspicious. Legambiente, WWF Italy, Greenpeace Italy, and the Kyoto Club have recently classified the so-called "sustainable nuclear" option as a "wrong and senseless choice" because it is expensive, takes a long time, and does not solve the age-old waste problem.
