The National Environmental Protection System has been keeping an eye on marine debris. And the news is positive. There is a large reduction along the Italian shores, equal to nearly half of the beached garbage, or the rubbish present on the beaches every 100 meters. The figure is encouraging, but it is still far from the European target: from 460 in 2015 to 273, while Europe sets a limit of 20 for good environmental condition. In terms of water waste, there is an average coastal density of 105 objects per square kilometer and an average offshore density of 3 objects from 2018 to 2022. Moreover 80% of the tracked objects are made of synthetic polymers, with roughly 20% being single-use plastics.
