According to the results of a study published in prestigious international scientific journals, earthquake tremors in the Campi Flegrei, just outside Naples, could increase in both number and intensity. The study is called "The Campi Flegrei caldera unrest: discriminating magma intrusions from hydrothermal effects and implications for possible evolution". It was signed by an international pool of volcanologists: Giuseppe De Natale, Claudia Troise, Roberto Schiavone, Renato Somma, and Roberto Moretti (Ingv - Vanvitelli University - Institute of Physics and Volcanology of Paris). According to the study, "Seismicity should increase (in number and magnitude) as ground uplift increases". As a matter of fact, it is seismicity and not the possible eruption of Vesuvius that is the real point of attention of the study. "The evolution of seismicity over the last decade already confirms an increasing trend, more pronounced in recent years," the research further states. A few days ago, a magnitude 4.2 quake that occurred at 3:35 a.m. caused great alarm.
