The Tidal Center of the City of Venice and the University of Padua have initiated technical and scientific cooperation to recover hydroelectric power from the city's waterways and canals. In the early 1970s, the City of Venice established the first tide observing service (a siren placed on the bell tower of St. Mark's Basilica) to signal the approach of serious events. In 1980, the Tide Forecast and Warning Center was established with the task of ensuring maximum information on rising water levels and an effective and timely warning service. The Center has gradually been enriched with increasingly improved systems in monitoring, forecasting and information. Now the aim is to derive energy even from small currents. An interesting idea precisely in this new phase of ecological transition.
