Green light for Italian pears in China with the first container shipments expected soon after the positive results of the latest inspections conducted by Beijing authorities after the Italy-China Government Committee. The overcoming of phytosanitary barriers and the opening of markets such as China has always been a key priority objective for the enhancement of Made in Italy production. However, it is important that such openings must be increasingly managed in the future at the EU level by the European Commission, which negotiates for all to avoid that selective interventions by individual member states end up becoming elements of competition between countries in the same single European market. This is a historic achievement, the result of a long and demanding negotiation activity undertaken since 2017 and which has been completed thanks to the efforts of the National Phytosanitary Service in close collaboration with the operators in the sector and the diplomatic representations of the two countries, taking advantage of all the tools that information technology has made available in recent years to carry out the technical visit on site. This was an important step in opening up this important market to a leading product of the national agricultural sector and, in particular, of the Emilia-Romagna region, which was severely affected by the flooding and counts a historical tradition in the cultivation of pears and is still the main area of pear production in Italy, with products that can boast the Protected Geographical Indication mark.
