Mestre - and all of Italy - awoke in shock to the tragedy that occurred shortly after 7:30 p.m. yesterday, when an electric bus that was on service on behalf of a local accommodation facility, the "Hu" camping site in Marghera, plunged from the ramp of an overpass and caught fire after a ten-meter flight. 21 people lost their lives in the accident, 19 of whom died on the spot while 2 others after being hospitalized. The victims also include 2 children and a teenager. The deceased are 5 Ukrainian nationals, a German, a Croatian, a Frenchman, and the Italian driver, 40-year-old Alberto Rizzotto from Treviso. Although the causes of the disaster are being investigated, one of the leads that currently seems among the most plausible would be that of an illness that may have seized the driver. Such a reconstruction could be corroborated by a video, now under investigation by investigators, in which the vehicle is seen arriving, slowing down, braking and being almost stationary when it breaks through the guardrail: a dynamic apparently compatible precisely with that of a sudden "physical blackout" of the driver. Unfortunately, the disaster could take on even more serious dimensions than the current one, as of the 15 injured (including 2 children and 2 teenagers), 5 are reported to be in a very serious condition. The Venice Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation file, for now against unknown persons.
