In 2022, 703,432 occupational injuries were reported to the National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work (INAIL), about 139 thousand more than the more than 564 thousand in 2021 (+24.6 percent). This increase is due to both occupational COVID-19 contagions, up from 49 thousand in 2021 to 120 thousand in 2022, and "traditional" injuries. In 2020, in particular, the average incidence of new Coronavirus claims in total reported injuries was one in every four, in 2021 it dropped to one in 12, and in 2022 it rose again to one in six. Net of COVID-19 infections, "traditional" injury reports in 2022 show an increase of more than 13 percent compared to 2021. Recognized on-the-job injuries in 2022 totaled 429,004, up 18.2 percent from 363,074 in the previous year. About 15 percent occurred "outside the company", i.e., "on the occasion of work by means of transport" or "on the way to and from work", on the round trip between home and the workplace. High recognition rates for the component from Coronavirus were about 89% in 2020, 74% in 2021 and 70% in 2022.
