Jannik Sinner won the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing Wednesday with a doubles 7-6 victory over Daniil Medvedev. This is the South Tyrolean tennis player's first victory over the Russian, who had prevailed over him in the previous six meetings. Sinner's ninth career victory on the circuit, and his third of the season, following victories in Montpellier and Toronto. From Monday, Sinner will rise to fourth place in the world rankings, the best result ever for an Italian tennis player in the Open era, equaling Adriano Panatta. It should be noted that in the pre-Open period, Nicola Pietrangeli was the world's third best singles player for two years (1959 and 1960). With the victory in Beijing, Sinner ties Fabio Fognini for the most APT victories with a total of nine victories. In front of Sinner and Fognini is currently only Adriano Panatta, who has won ten events in his career. As a matter of fact, Sinner's arrival at the ATP Finals in Turin is now almost certain.
