The first rum distillery in Italy with sugarcane cultivation is born in Sicily, specifically in Modica, a UNESCO heritage city. It is called Distilleria Alma and is run by three entrepreneurs, Annalisa Spadaro, Hugo Gallardo and Alejandro Lopez, who set out on a journey back in time to rediscover the importance of sugarcane, which was introduced to Sicily by the Arabs in the seventh century B.C. and became a profitable industry for the entire territory until it disappeared after seven centuries of cultivation. Today, Sicily's subtropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters, allows sugarcane to thrive for a long period of the year, from March to November, when the temperature drops and sugar concentration occurs. In 2022, the company decided to cultivate three hectares of land with limestone and iron characteristics. When the sugarcane reaches maturity, it is processed to make 100 percent Sicilian rum. "Mater" is the brand that unites all the products, telling the story of Sicily, the motherland of the distillery and raw materials.
