Istat has updated its data on road accidents with injuries to persons for 2022, published on July 25, 2023, by introducing provincial territorial detail and using a more articulated road category classification. According to Aci-Istat data, in 2022, in the 107 Italian provinces, accidents, deaths and injuries return to pre-pandemic levels: 165,889 accidents (454 per day), 3,159 deaths (8.7/g.), 223,475 injuries (612/g.). In 2021, personal injury accidents were 151,875 (+9.2% in 2022); 172,183 in 2019 (-3.7%); deaths 2,875 (+9.9%); 3,173 in 2019 (-0.4%); injuries 204,728 in 2021 (+9.2%); 241,384 in 2019 (-7.4%). Compared with 2019 (the year chosen as the benchmark for the 2030 target), 53 out of 107 provinces recorded an increase in the number of road deaths. In 53 others, however, the number decreased. Only in the province of Lodi did the number of deaths remain stable.
