One of the findings of the ENIT study, undertaken by Unioncamere with technical assistance from ISNART, is that Italy is an exclusive destination. Over 20% of foreign tourists choose our places specifically because they are drawn to the Italian way of life, equating our country with an "allure" of exclusivity. The poll of Italian lodging facilities, conducted in mid-September 2023, matches the end-of-July estimates, with sales increasing compared to 2019, the previous pre-pandemic year. In comparison to 2019, operators report an average occupancy rate of 75.3% in July and 85% in August, an increase of approximately 1 room per 10. The structures of coastal resorts had the greatest average room occupancy rate (89.4%), but the balance of art cities (83.3%) and mountain facilities (82.7%) is also more than positive. According to the early September figures, 60.2% of rooms are occupied / booked already in the middle of the month, owing to the still mild weather that favors the last sunbaths and sea, in addition to the typical late summer visits to art cities (62.8%). July (75.9%) and August (86.7%) were the most consistent months for sales in the non-hotel sector, propelled by campsites (82.3% in July and 94.3% in August), structures that appear to continue to favor forms of outdoor tourism that are more in touch with nature. In September, on the other hand, the hôtellerie (61.9%) improves, with medium-high category hotels recording the highest occupancy rate of the season (67.1% in 4-5 stars). Despite a minor reduction in nearby tourism, the trend appears to be more than compensated by an increase in foreign tourists compared to summer 2022, as indicated by more than 30% of exhibitors, particularly travelers from Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
