In the new generations of young Southerners, there is a progressive extension of educational paths. The so-called "Millennials" (born between 1981 and 1995) are by far the most educated, mainly due to the visible reduction of the component with degrees below a high school diploma (24.4 percent), now surpassed by the tertiary component (27.8 percent). This is one of the interesting data contained in ISTAT's focus entitled "Young people in the Mezzogiorno: the uncertain transition to adulthood". The propensity for university studies has increased in recent years, especially in the South: here, in the a.y. 2021-22, there are 58 matriculated per 100 residents aged 19 (56 in the North-Center); 47 enrolled per 100 19-25 year olds (41 in the North-Center); 22 graduates (calendar year 2022; Cycle I and II) per 100 23-25 year olds (19). Enrollment increases especially in regions with high unemployment and low GDP per capita (between 2010 and 2022: Sicily +15.6 points; Sardinia +13.6; Calabria +10.9; conversely: Lazio +8.4; Lombardy +5).
