The track of sports fraud is not neglected by the magistrates of the Turin prosecutor's office investigating soccer players' bets on illegal Internet platforms. At the moment, no episodes have emerged, but verifications are ongoing. For now, the file remains open only for abusive exercise of betting, a crime that is punishable by arrest of up to three months and a fine of a maximum of 516 euros, although one can get out of it by paying a sum of money as an oblation. Should stories of athletes who bet on their own team, and not in favor of winning, come up, the matter would be complicated. Nicolò Fagioli admitted to betting on soccer matches, but not where formations in which he played were involved. As for the other two players listed in the register of suspects, Sandro Tonali and Niccolò Zaniolo, they will be heard as soon as possible. Contacts between prosecutors and defense lawyers have already been initiated. Arranging the meeting is not the easiest because the two are in England at the disposal of their clubs. Investigators also need to complete a series of inquiries. Today the so-called forensic copy of the cell phones taken last week by the police (on the instructions of the prosecutor's office) from the players in Coverciano during the national team's retreat was made. The analysis of the material can thus begin. In addition to data on links to the relevant websites, the chats are considered of particular interest. The investigation, which builds on a case opened by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate in 2022, during which a betting ring on unauthorized platforms was stumbled upon, is far from over.
