The Italian government has announced the reintroduction of internal land border controls with Slovenia, based on Article 28 of the Schengen Borders Code. The reintroduction of internal border controls, which has already been adopted in the Schengen area, was communicated by Minister Piantedosi to European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas, European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, Secretary General of the Council of the European Union Thérèse Blanchet, and the interior ministers of EU member states and Schengen associated countries. Indeed, the intensification of crisis outbreaks on Europe's borders, particularly after the attack conducted against Israel, has raised the threat level of violent action within the Union as well. A picture further aggravated by the constant migratory pressure Italy is under, by sea and land (140 thousand arrivals on Italian coasts, +85% compared to 2022). In the Friuli Venezia Giulia region alone, since the beginning of the year, 16 thousand people who entered the national territory irregularly have been identified. This scenario, which is also being studied in depth by the Strategic Counter-Terrorism Analysis Committee established at the Ministry of the Interior, confirms the need for further strengthening of prevention and control measures. In national assessments, in fact, police measures at the Italian-Slovenian border do not appear adequate to guarantee the required security. The measure will be implemented from October 21 for a period of 10 days, which can be extended in accordance with EU Regulation 2016/339. The control methods will be implemented in a way that ensures the proportionality of the measure, adapted to the threat and calibrated to cause the least possible impact on cross-border movement and freight traffic.
