The EU is armoring up as the terror threat level rises across the continent. Italy and 10 other countries have decided to reinstate border controls, with a notification to the European Commission informing it of the suspension of Schengen freedom of movement. The countries to have reinstated border controls are Slovenia, Austria, Germany, France, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, Denmark and Norway (a non-EU country but a member of the Schengen area). The communication from the Italian government came Wednesday evening, specifically with respect to the border with Slovenia. The reintroduction of controls will be implemented from October 21 for a period of 10 days, which can be extended under EU Regulation 2016/339. According to the Executive, police measures at the Italian-Slovenian border would not be adequate to guarantee the required security, even in the face of the worsening situation in the Middle East and the growing terrorist alert in Europe. Particularly sensitive is the situation in France, where several French airports were evacuated this morning due to bomb scares. Alarm today also at the Palace of Versailles, evacuated for the fourth time since last Saturday.
