WhatsApp, Messenger and Telegram are the most used chats by Italians. This is the result of the analysis conducted by social media expert Vincenzo Cosenza on Audicom data. WhatsApp is on the devices of 78.5 percent of Italians, in 2022 it was preferred by 33.8 million people, peaking in July 2023 at 35 million. It is also the app with the highest usage time: on average in 2022 it was used for 10 hours and 31 minutes per person per month. Messenger, another Meta Group platform, holds the second position: it is used by 40 percent of the population; an average of 17.2 million people opened it in 2022, down slightly on the previous year (but it holds users for only 47 minutes per month). Telegram is third: it has an average of 15.5 million Italian users (36%). Between the chats most used by Italians and the niche ones there is a significant gap in terms of numbers, the latter having less than 5 million users. In fourth place is Skype (3.2 million average users), followed by Discord (1.85 million). Google's family of communication apps - namely the new Chat and Meet app - is used by more than 4 million Italians. It is followed by Kik, (1 million); Signal, the most security-conscious app, with an average of 575,000 users in 2022; Viber with 445,000; Line with 343,000; and WeChat with 192,000 users.
