Elisabetta Belloni, the director of the intelligence services, was interrogated by the Parliamentary Committee for Security and reported on interactions with American colleagues. The United States reported in a statement issued to many nations, including Italy, that Moscow had begun a campaign to interfere in the next European Parliament election. For some time, the Italian intelligence services have been conducting a series of investigations into the matter: social channels maintained by Moscow have been reported through which a specific form of propaganda can be channeled. Even before the invasion of Ukraine, the Parliamentary Committee (Copasir) documented Russian attempts to spread disinformation in political debate. The intervention of the Committee comes at a critical juncture: on Wednesday, October 25, parliamentarians will travel to Washington with President Lorenzo Guerini to meet with members of Congress and intelligence officials in a trip that was already planned but will inevitably include a discussion of Russian influence.
