A setback for the Sicilian mafia groups of Custonaci, Valderice, and Trapani. The Anti-Mafia Investigative Directorate, Trapani Police, and the Investigative Unit of the Carabinieri Provincial Command of Trapani have detained 17 people and placed four others under house arrest as part of an anti-mafia operation coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Palermo. "Scialandro" was the name of the operation, and the investigation lasted two years. The investigators' efforts have enabled the reconstruction of the organizational schematics of the "families" and have exposed the collusion that existed between clans and former municipal administration of Custonaci officials. Using illicit contacts, the bosses were able to impose on the administration the names of the recipients of financial contributions supplied during the pandemic, as well as steer the awarding of public contracts in favor of collaborating companies or attributed to them, even via intermediaries. One of the corporations had implemented a simulated recruitment process for an individual serving a life sentence so that he could enjoy a degree of partial freedom. Additionally, extortion and intimidation were used to exert socioeconomic control over the territory against farm owners who were "convinced" by threats not to purchase land of interest to the gangs.
