In 2022, 17.6% of families in Italy would pay rent, while 73.2% will own their own home. The prevalence of absolute poverty varies depending on the title of enjoyment of one's residence. According to Istat, there are around 983 thousand poor families in rent, accounting for 45% of all poor families, with an incidence of absolute poverty of 21.2% compared to 4.8% of those living in owner-occupied houses. In comparison to 2021, when the incidence for rented households was 19.1% and for ownership it was 4.3%, both figures have increased. The percentage of absolute poverty in rented families in the South is 24.1%, compared to 19.9% in the North and 20.2% in the Centre. Regarding the various types of rented households, the incidence of absolute poverty is higher for households with a reference person between 45 and 54 years old (equal to 24.7%), while the incidence for families with an elderly reference person (65 years and over) is higher compared to 2021 (17.9% from 13.3% in 2021). Incidence shows indications of deterioration in households wholly constituted of Italian members renting (from 12.7% to 15.2% in 2021), whereas it remains relatively stable, albeit at higher values, in households with foreign members renting (from 34.7% to 34.4%).
