Searching on Google for "Artificial Intelligence", the search engine, limiting us to the Italian language alone, returns more than 30 million results, a tangible sign of the growing interest in this technology even in our country. But what is the relationship between Italians and AI? The answer comes from a report carried out by the digital intelligence company The Fool, which involved a sample of 1,000 Italians between the ages of 16 and 64 to analyze their relationship with ChatGPT, the AI model developed by OpenAI that has initiated a massive and widespread use of this new tool, democratizing AI in a way never seen before, becoming by far the fastest growing application ever. The results reveal a mismatched view among different generations and prompt more than one reflection on the use of AI in the immediate future. 18% said they have already used and use ChatGPT, while the remaining 82% have varying levels of awareness about AI. 42% have heard of ChatGPT but have never used it, 20% have heard of it but do not know what it is. That leaves 18% who said they had never heard of it before. A key point that emerged from the research concerns the perceived usefulness of ChatGPT. The results show that Generation Z is the main early adopter, with 71% of those using it recognizing its potential in terms of usefulness, while other generations perceive this to a lesser extent. This generation uses it mainly for educational purposes, to find sources of inspiration and to deepen their general knowledge. A use that we might define as "oracular". The prompts used have an interrogative form to get answers on a wide variety of topics. However, the research also reveals that trust toward ChatGPT in the long run is low, with 53% of users worrying that it may be a biased tool and 36% not trusting it for constant use.
