Spending on welfare in Italy will grow to €632.4 billion in 2023, with a trend progression of 3.7 percent, including in the scope the three traditional pillars of health, social policies and welfare, as well as education. The figure emerges from the report by the Welfare Italia think tank. In particular, welfare spending will absorb more than half of the resources, or 50.3 percent of the total. This is followed by health spending (21.5 percent), spending on social policies (16.9 percent) and education (11.3 percent). Compared to 2022, social security spending is up 7.1 percent from €296.9 billion to €317.9 billion. Health spending in 2023 is up 3.8 percent year on year, while spending on social policies shows a decrease of 2.9 percent compared to 2022. Finally, spending on education is expected to increase by 0.6 percent year-on-year. In a ranking that evaluates aspects related to both welfare spending and the results this spending produces, the highest score is from the province of Bolzano (83.3 points), followed by those of Trento (81.4 points) and Emilia Romagna (76.3 points). On the opposite side of the ranking are Basilicata (61.4 points), Campania (60.4 points) and Calabria (56.7 points).
