For the first time in seven years, Italy has lost its leadership as a wine producer in Europe and the world with an estimated production of 43.9 million hectoliters down 12 percent from last year while France has become the leading producer with 45 million hectoliters, up 1.5 percent from the previous year. This is according to updated forecasts from Copa Cogeca, the organization representing European farmers and cooperatives. The challenge between countries is actually played above all on the valorization of production confirmed by the success of Made in Italy bottles even in France with a +21% jump in value of national wine exports in the first seven months of 2023. Overall, production in the European Union for the 2023 vintage is down compared to 2022, with a total of just over 150 million hectoliters down -5.5 percent from the five-year average.
