Leonardo (aerospace and security, $15 billion in revenue) is forming agreements to establish "European poles" in the defense industry. The preferred discussion is with "Germans and French". The CEO of Leonardo (ex-Finmeccanica) Roberto Cingolani, in a hearing before the Defence Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, highlighted some of the group's strategic lines. Cingolani announced that "a new Space division has been created”, as well as adding that "joint ventures of a gigantic nature are coming because we want to be one of the engines of the creation of the European Security Area”. Cingolani did not specify which industries or potential collaborators are being discussed but said that "creating European hubs means creating objects that will not only be Italian, German, or French, but will compete on an equal footing with the Chinese and American giants." He referred to "a glue that builds large structures". According to reliable sources, Leonardo will focus on two areas: land weaponry and military electronics. Among the prospective rivals are extensive discussions with Rheinmetall of Germany, a leader in land-based armored vehicles. The desire of the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, to buy German-made Leopard 2 tanks for 8.2 billion euros over 14 years is also on the table. An agreement between Leonardo and Rheinmetall, and also with KMW, could be part of this perspective.
