They were discharged from the hospital following an initial illness after having dinner in a pizzeria in Ariano Irpino, in the province of Avellino. Then their condition worsened and she, Gerardina Corsano, 46, died while her husband Angelo, 52, is hospitalized in serious condition but would not be life-threatening. It will be the investigations conducted by the police to shed light on the alleged botulinum food poisoning that would have caused the woman's death. The couple had dinner last Saturday, October 28, at a pizzeria in the area, ordering a pizza topped with spicy oil. In the following hours, Gerardin's husband complained of excruciating pains in his stomach and vomiting, so much so that the following day he went to the emergency room of the Sant'Ottone Frangiapane hospital in Ariano Irpino. After initial checks, the doctors did not find any serious problems, arranging a brief treatment for gastrointestinal intoxication. So the man returned home while his wife, the following Monday, went to the emergency room for the same tests. For her, too, the same process and the return home. In the following hours, however, the situation degenerated and on Tuesday 31 October the woman was urgently admitted to hospital where she died a few hours later. Her husband was also seriously injured and transferred to the San Pio hospital in Benevento for further examinations.
