Pope Francis enjoys a high level of trust among citizens. Much higher than the Church itself. This is shown by a survey conducted by the Demos study center. Of course, trust has declined in recent years but it remains high, shared by almost two-thirds of Italians, 64 percent to be precise. The figure confirms this Pontiff as the most respected and accredited public figure (and authority) in Italy, along with President Sergio Mattarella, two sure references in uncertain times. Italians' trust in the Church, however, falls. It stands at 34 percent, the lowest index in the past 20 years. This trend reflects, first of all, the evolution of religious practice in society. In fact, as Istat research finds, currently 19% of Italians attend places of worship at least once a week. 31% "never" do it. Pope Francis is appreciated even by those who declare an "occasional" practice. And it is interesting to note how the Pope's popularity overcomes the distinctions and walls of politics. It reaches, in fact, the highest level among Forza Italia and PD voters. But it also appears broad among those who vote for M5S and the Fratelli d'Italia, while it touches the lowest level, however "majority" it is confirmed, among Lega voters. The reasons appear understandable, given that Pope Francis preaches welcoming migrants and opening borders, an opposite message from that of the Lega party.
