In 2022 and the first months of 2023, more than 2.8 million trees were planted in Italy. A figure that is somewhat higher (+15.7%) than previous year and capable of delivering ecosystem services such as climate management, improved air quality, combatting hydrogeological instability, and improving tourist and cultural attractions for a total annual value of more than 23.5 million euros. The interventions carried out in 2022 and the first quarter of 2023 are depicted in the third edition of Legambiente's Atlas of Forests. The regions with the most trees planted are Lombardy, Trentino Alto Adige, and Veneto. Turin and Venice top the list of metropolitan cities. The NRRP provided for a 330-million-euro expenditure to plant 6.6 million trees by 2024 in order to increase green areas in urban cities. However, the problems encountered in the first year of intervention implementation, particularly due to the restricted availability of plants, prompted the government to request a revision of the aim and the de-financing of one-third of the initial allocation (110 million out of 330).
