The most terrifying crime is stealing in one's own home. The fear of being burglarized at home ranks first in the minds of 52.8% of Italians, with percentages reaching 58.6% among those who live in a single home or villa and 57.6% among the elderly. In reality, home burglary is a common occurrence: 9 million Italians (18.7% of the population) have been victims of house intrusions, and 44.5% know neighbors or acquaintances who have been victims. This is what the 2nd Report of Verisure Italia's Observatory on Home Safety "The House I Want. A safe and reassuring place", created by Censis with the help of the Ministry of the Interior's Criminal Analysis Service. In 2022, there were 135,447 residential burglaries and robberies, a 7.2% rise over the previous year. However, we are a long way from pre-Covid figures and values at the start of the decade. In fact, there was a 46.9% decline in house burglaries and robberies between 2013 and 2022. However, not everywhere is the same: this form of crime is concentrated in large metropolitan regions. Rome is first, with 11,600 residential burglaries in 2022, accounting for 8.7% of the national total. Milan comes in second with 9,081 thefts (6.8%) while Turin comes in fourth with 5,875 (4.4%). These three major cities account for 20% of all home burglaries perpetrated in Italy each year. When compared to the resident population, Bologna comes first with 35.7 theft crimes per 10,000 residents, followed by Florence (33.7 per 10,000 inhabitants) and Venice (33.5).
