Italy outside national borders now consists of about 6 million people. The figure is contained in the Migrantes Foundation's new Italians in the World Report. The number of Italians living abroad has grown by +91 percent since 2006. As of January 1, 2023, there are 5,933,418 compatriots registered in the Registry of Italians living abroad (Aire), 10.1 percent of the 58.8 million Italians living in Italy. While the country continues inexorably to lose residents (in one year -132,405 people, -0.2 percent), Italy outside Italy continues to grow, albeit less strongly than in previous years. Of the nearly 6 million Italians living abroad, 46.5 percent are from the South (15.9 percent from the Islands alone), 37.8 percent from the North (19.1 percent from the Northwest) and 15.8 percent from the Center. Today, the largest Italian communities are found in Argentina (over 921,000 members, 15.5 percent of the total), Germany (over 822,000, 13.9 percent), and Switzerland (over 639,000, 10.8 percent). This is followed by Brazil, France, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
